How to Select Sealing Rings for Industrial Applications?

The right sealing ring is selected by matching the seal to the machine's actual working conditions, not simply by choosing a size that fits the groove. For industrial equipment, the key factors are the sealing medium, temperature, pressure, movement, material compatibility, installation design, and expected service conditions. A suitable sealing ring is the result of balancing these factors rather than relying on one specification.

The first thing to identify is the medium that the seal will contact. Mineral oil, hydraulic fluid, water, grease, fuel, and chemicals can affect elastomers differently. NBR is commonly used with many petroleum-based oils and greases, while FKM is often considered where higher temperature or different chemical resistance is required. EPDM is commonly selected for certain water- and steam-related applications but is generally unsuitable for many petroleum oils. For procurement teams, the practical approach is to give the supplier more than a part number. Providing the medium, temperature range, pressure, movement, speed, dimensions, and installation conditions allows the manufacturer to recommend a more appropriate material and construction.
